“We look at the AWEA conference as a very valuable opportunity for us to get the word out that we are in the offshore space in a big way. So we are going to be ready when the market hits.”
– Benjamin Bell, President & CEO, GL Garrad Hassan North America
“Offshore wind in the U.S. is in its starting days… It’s important to be at the North American Offshore Wind Conference & Exhibition from the beginning to influence the process of offshore wind development.”

Scientific/Technical Track
Wednesday, October 6, 2010
10:30am to 12:00pm- Resource Assessment Testing the wind resource is an essential part of project planning and there are many options for doing so. This session will cover initial testing through resource modeling, meteorological tower data from Lake Erie, wind resource results from Europe, and options for concurrent project design and resource testing.
1:30pm to 3:00pm- Metocean Measurement and Project Planning Metocean data includes wind and wave measurements in the offshore environment. It is essential to understand how both of these forces will act on offshore wind turbines. This session will cover the benefits of using real time data to inform operational decisions, the extreme conditions that can occur during hurricanes and an example of guidelines that can be used when designing and constructing projects in the U.S.
3:30pm to 5:00pm- Transmission All offshore wind projects must carry the electricity produced to shore and connect it into the grid. Offshore projects benefit from a proximity to demand centers, as the majority of the U.S. population lives near the coast. Several speakers will provide information on connecting to the grid, coordinated transmission planning, siting of transmission lines and meteorologically-designed configurations for offshore wind projects.
Thursday, October 7, 2010
9:45am to 10:45am- Risk Assessment This session will take a look at offshore wind project development from an insurance perspective. Interface management will be introduced as a tool for reducing risk and a representative from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Regulation and Enforcement will discuss the new safety division.
10:50am to 12:20pm- Environmental Monitoring Methods and Technology Technology options for environmental monitoring will be presented during this session – including digital techniques, acoustic surveys for bats, radar analysis and thermal imaging. Data collection efforts are also underway in the U.S. to create baseline data that can be used to inform project planning and improve future studies once projects are in place.
1:35pm to 2:35pm- Wildlife Data Collection A great deal of studies have been conducted in Europe to determine the impacts of offshore wind projects on wildlife. These studies show that the environmental impacts of projects are minimal and easily mitigated. Data from a multi-year study before and during the construction of a project in Scotland will be presented to provide an example of the impacts on marine mammals. Data from U.S. studies on birds and bats in the offshore environment will also be presented.
3:00pm - 4:30pm- U.S. Offshore Developers' Perspectives This exciting panel will provide an update on projects proposed along the East Coast, offshore from Texas and in the Great Lakes. Major developers will engage in a discussion led by Jim Lanard, President of the newly formed Offshore Wind Development Coalition.
